TONY Dempsey not only shaped thousands of surfboards during his long career, he played a major role in shaping the story of surfing on the Gold Coast and in Australia. Now retired, it doesn’t take much to persuade this icon of Gold Coast surfing to grab his board and paddle out through the break at his beloved Burleigh Heads, just as he has done countless times before.

BLINK and you might just miss legendary Gold Coast cyclist Robbie McEwen.The sprint cyclist, arguably the world’s fastest on the road at his peak, earned the nickname “Rocket Robbie” in an illustrious career that saw him win three Tour de France green jerseys (leading sprint points scorer), 12 Le Tour stage wins and 12 Giro d’Italia stage wins. He represented Australia at Olympic Games and was Australian road champion twice.

TARGET shooter Rachael Ross is carrying the weight of three nations on her shoulders as she sets her sights on a Commonwealth Games medal. Rachael’s family is of Indian heritage but she was born in Singapore and now hopes to compete for Australia. Rachael and her family – dad Anthony, mum Mary and brother Raphael – moved to Queensland 10 years ago and a now have Australian citizenship.

THREE British table tennis stars are counting the days until they are back on the Coast for the Commonwealth Games. Team England player Paul Drinkhall, Scotsman Gavin Rumgay and Welsh born Charlotte Carey were on the Coast for several weeks for the Australian Open championship and it won their hearts.
