AIRPORT READY FOR ITS BIGGEST CHALLENGE
GOLD Coast Airport is undergoing a $300 million makeover as it prepares for its greatest challenge – next year’s Commonwealth Games. Just a decade ago $100 million was spent on upgrading facilities and now nine airlines service domestic and international routes from the airport, with 44,000 individual flights logged in 2016, making it the nation’s sixth busiest. The airport, which straddles the Queensland-New South Wales border at the southern end of the Gold Coast, handles around 6.5 million passengers a year but in 2018 will have to cope with an extra 126,000 people expected to fly in for the Commonwealth Games in April.
