UP to 50,000 Gold Coast businesses will have access to cheaper, high speed internet next year thanks to a city council project for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The council is installing 45kms of 864-core fibre optic cable at a cost of $5.5m. It can carry twice as much data as the NBN and also provides more capacity in that area than offered by any of the nation’s telecommunications carriers.

DON’T worry about how quick the 2018 Commonwealth Games track athletes are – it’s the Gold Coast’s public Wi-Fi network that will really be really setting speed records. It’s the fastest - and largest - in Australia and will allow tens of thousands of 2018 Commonwealth Games fans to log in for free and send pics and live video straight to their social media accounts during the 12-day sporting extravaganza in April. When the Games are over the Wi-Fi system will still be there for tourists – and locals – to upload their great times or even watch movies while they chill on the beach.

STREAMING media giant Netflix is changing the landscape for moviemakers, making it harder than ever to bring feature films to the big screen, warns a Gold Coast producer. Brett Thornquest, who produced the science fiction films Infini,Terminus and The Osiris Child and horror genre movie Better Watch Out, said not only were streaming media services altering the way people watched, they were changing the way in which movies and television series were produced.
